Ad Watch Coverage

Q: How do you produce effective Ad Watch stories?

A: Thor Wasbotten, KGUN, Tucson: The staff must have time to properly research and present the story. The staff should be properly trained in how to do the computer assisted reporting and other research techniques. The reporter should also have a support staff. At KGUN, the investigative reporter who produces Ad Watch stories is joined by an intern and a producer/photographer. That team is also led by a elections’ producer.

A: Gregg Lagerquist, WGME13, Portland, Maine: A reporter needs to have the time to get the real information out of the ad. “Get access to the bill in question and pick apart the ad almost frame by frame.”

Q: Can an Ad Watch story stand alone in the newscast?

A: Michael Geeser, KLAS, Las Vegas: No. “Too many stations make these segments the only political news of the day; The campaign ad isn’t the story, the issues of the campaign are. The ad (coverage) is the sidebar.”
