Meet the Press, NBC News
NETWORK WINNER
Meet the Press host and NBC News Washington Bureau Chief
Tim Russert conducted two hour-long live interviews with George
W. Bush and Al Gore, exploring such issues as Social Security,
the death penalty and national security. Russert was first
journalist to query Bush in depth about his appearance at
Bob Jones University. In addition, Russert had pointed and
in-depth questions for Vice President Gore about his role
in the 1996 fundraising scandal, the abortion issue and the
Elian Gonzalez case. The judges praise Meet the Press for
its extensive preparation, and the effective use of quotes
to elicit more specific responses aimed at holding the candidates
more accountable.
