WFLA-TV, Tampa, FL
LOCAL STATION, MEDIUM MARKET

Through its "Voice of the Voter", WFLA asked viewers what issues were most important and what they would ask the candidates. The station used poll, phone bank and Internet input to frame questions to the candidates during debates. WFLA also provided up to three minutes of free, unedited airtime to candidates. Following each segment, the station aired a fact-check of the candidate's statements, evaluating what was true, false or distorted. The judges praise WFLA's commitment, innovation, and use of polls to take the pulse of the electorate and lauded the station's use of 10-minute mini-debates, free airtime and fact checking.
